moments from my childhood

moments from my childhood

I come from a family of artists, and I always admired what they did. As a child, I was drawn to creating things myself. I grew up in the country, and around the age of 8 or 9, I spent a lot of time alone. I was the youngest sibling, and my brothers and sisters were much older than me. My main companion was our German Shepherd, Tuffy. I’d be out in the woods with him, playing and exploring. The forest became my playground — it’s where I felt free and inspired. That’s when I started sketching. I was drawn to trees, animals, and nature — everything around me.

Since we lived outside of town and there weren’t many kids nearby, I’d often be out there with just Tuffy and a sketchpad. He’d sit by my side while I drew. That’s really where it all began — I found comfort in it. It gave me something to do, something I loved. And even now, I still find myself painting and drawing scenes inspired by those moments from my childhood."

handmade paintbrushes

My husband travels for work, so I often tag along and use it as a chance to explore the local art scene - dropping in on artistic activities whenever I can. I try to find out what's happening locally—especially anything art-related. If I'm in a place like Phoenix, Arizona, I’ll search for pop-up art classes or workshops. I ask myself: Where can I find something creative to do? Can I jump in? How much does it cost? And if it works out, I just go for it.

One time, I was lucky enough to find an art school in Scottsdale, Arizona, whcih happened to be hosting a visiting artist from London who makes handmade paintbrushes. It was just a one-day workshop, and I stumbled upon it by chance. I thought, Yes! I ended up buying several of her brushes. They were incredible—really unique. Later, I found her work online and was able to order more, but I just felt so lucky to have been there that day. It was such a special experience.
