I am a writer at heart, and a musician daily.

James Wiita

I am a writer at heart, and a musician daily.

I’ve loved a melody a long while, born into a musical family. I’ve learned it’s not for everyone, but it is for me. Overall, it’s easy to share, and in many occasions add a joy. Though in all that, I realize my biggest creative outlet would be writing. Writing lyrics to my own music has been with me since my teen years. I still sing a few of those songs, so they stick. My long-held career involved technical writing in an engineering environment. With boredom and double screens to stare at …I began creating 3 page “pieces “, based on a single word or phrase. It was self-entertaining, and I shared a few of them to folks I thought may enjoy. Song lyrics and music tagged along in all those years, reasons to express myself.

I unceremoniously left that career, taking my 100+ “piece “writings with me. Through those years while in the Twin Ports I hosted an Open Mic regularly, played a weekly gig and put together a Saturday morning event for a time. I’ve always wanted to bring and share a bit of talent, inviting others to join in.

My family and I chose to move to Cloquet in 2017, a good decision as we sought out Florida, and decided Cloquet was far enough south, and closer to our one daughter. Since falling in love with this community, my main focus in sharing musically is found in the annual Farmers Market in Cloquet. Since I've been at it a number of years now, I've been labeled the "market musician". I enjoy playing at any number of quiet venues, but don't currently have a residency or regular circuit of " playing out".

Rock On Duluth

Working part time, in 2021 this idea of putting together a book began, which became ROCK ON, DULUTH! It is a unique history of rock entertainment from a number of perspectives. The non- fiction work is capturing the five-year history of a local promoter and the entity known as Yanqui Productions out of Duluth, MN. Fifty years ago, the shows and touring artists brought what is known as “Arena Rock” concerts to Duluth and the area. Using accurate timelines and a vast amount of personal memorabilia from the promoter helped show the business end of it all, and the overall aspirations of the times.

The book was well received by folks who recall the music and followed Arena Rock, but also those with an interest in the historical research of the times, many of them my early influences alongside the shows. It is a first-person account that strives for accuracy in relating the memories and clarification of some of the smoke laid haze of the times. A long-held dream would be an extended version of the work. The 250-page book was culled from some 500 in my original draft, with more information and insight on the times. I’ve met folks with valuable treasures and timeless photos not included, along with details cut. So, one dreams.
