‘Sweet and Low:’ An Hour for Tennyson

“’Sweet and Low:’ An Hour for Tennyson,” a presentation of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Poetry by Sandy Dugan. Phrases from Tennyson’s verse are part of our language, but their original contexts are forgotten. This presentation refreshes our memory with poems that moved Tennyson’s contemporaries and will touch a susceptible heart today. Victorian England knew and loved Tennyson. He wrote and published prolifically; his poetry engaged contemporary issues; he influenced the language of his day. English speakers today say, “Their’s not to reason why,” “Sweet ‘n’ Low,” “I am a part of all that I have met,” etc. Hearing some of Tennyson’s poems will raise our sense of beauty in speaking English.
