Event Details
Lyz Jaakola and members of the Oshkii Giizhik (“New Day”) Singers will introduce us to hand drums and songs from the Ojibwe-Anishinaabe women’s singing tradition. Lyz’s name in the Ojibwe-Anishinabe language means “The Lady Who Knows How To Sing,“ and she feels that her purpose in life is to teach people to understand each other better through the medium of music. Anishinaabe traditional songs vary from occasion to occasion. Ceremonial songs are reserved for ceremony. Powwow songs are usually sung by the men but there are many other genres of music in Native cultures. While styles of music vary greatly from culture to culture, music has the ability to transcend those differences and help people understand each other.
